OCHA is Transforming Public Housing to Meet the Needs of Their Oldest Low-Income Residents

Carl Goggins feels like he can’t be careful enough when it comes to the coronavirus. Apart from the danger the virus poses to him as a 67-year-old, he worries what would happen if he fell ill.

“I live by myself,” said Goggins. “Ain’t nobody gonna come to the door.”

Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced that the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) is launching a $2.5 million partnership with local businesses and nonprofits to distribute hundreds of thousands of meals to its most vulnerable residents through the end of the year.

The District of Columbia Housing Authority entered into a partnership with Black Girl Health, a nationally known organization that works with companies, government entities and more to integrate strategic health programming in rural and urban communities, to offer physical and mental health wellness workshops on September 10.

Patterson was recently featured on ForbesBooksRadio's affordable housing podcast ChangeMakers with Katie Goar. Mr. Patterson discussed CMHA's work not only to increase housing opportunities for low-income Cuyahoga families, but also to leverage the housing authority's resources and local partnerships to improve education outcomes for school-aged public housing residents. One way CMHA is advancing this goal is through expanding  high-speed internet access at CMHA communities.

Last Friday, Congresswoman Maxine Waters joined Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles President & CEO Doug Guthrie at HACLA’s Avalon Gardens public housing community to distribute UHC’s cloth masks to residents. HACLA has received 25,000 masks from UHC so far, and thousands more masks are coming soon. 

Thanks to the generosity of UnitedHealthcare Community & State, 45 PHAs will receive a total of 176,000 non-surgical, washable cloth masks, manufactured by clothing company Hanes, to share with their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
