On December 31, 2019 HUD announced more than $79 million in Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) grants to nearly 700 public housing authorities nationwide. FSS grants help public housing authorities hire service coordinators who connect public housing residents with local programs and services with the goal of increasing residents’ earnings and decreasing their dependencies on public assistance.

On March 21, 2019, Governor Ever’s honored the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM) for its “Make Your Money Talk” (MYMT) program, a financial empowerment program that provides financial literacy training and helps HACM’s residents build wealth. HACM was among 13 organizations and individuals in Wisconsin selected by the Governor’s Council on Financial Literacy to be recognized for their efforts in promoting financial literacy.

Housing costs are often a family’s largest expense, eating up a higher percentage of income the less a family earns. With that in mind, a program designed to let Ventura residents receiving rental subsidies keep more as their income increases has received more than $65,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh’s Family Self Sufficiency Program was one of several funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which awarded Pittsburgh $350,339 this year.
It’s a renewal grant, but there are no guarantees that each year’s funding will be approved, according to Michelle Sandidge, chief community affairs officer for the housing authority.

On December 21, 2018 HUD
announced nearly $29 million in grant awards under its Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency - Service Coordinators (ROSS-SC) Program. Eleven CLPHA members received ROSS-SC awards, totaling over $4.7 million.
The Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM) and partner Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corp. (WWBIC) held a graduation ceremony for graduates of HACM’s Make Your Money Talk program, a financial literacy initiative that teaches HACM residents about budgeting, improving credit scores, and personal finances.
