Eighteen-year-old triplets Javier, Gerald Jr. and Miles Lumpkins are days away from heading to college — the first generation in their families to do so.

On Wednesday, their journey was made a little easier when, along with more than 170 other students at the Charles Hayes Center at 4859 S. Wabash, they took part in the Chicago Housing Authority’s annual Take Flight College Send Off.

Former Steelers’ Super Bowl champion Jerome Bettis is hoping to “WOW” Pittsburgh with a brand new project.

His foundation, “The Bus Stops Here” is teaming up with the housing authority and Stem Coding Lab for the “WiFi On Wheels” cyber bus.

It’s a mobile computer lab with 10-15 laptops, internet access, and a flat-screen monitor for remote learning.

While more people are becoming digitally connected, there is still a notable digital divide between younger and older Americans.

This is why the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority is working to connect seniors to the internet through a digital learning class.

One participant in this class was Oscar Lawrence.

Lawrence learned the basics of how to use a computer and typing.

Greater Steps Scholars, formerly known as the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund, is hosting a summer-long dorm room and school supply drive with the goal of providing the organization's scholars with the essential items they need to pursue a college education. 

CLPHA Director of Cross-Sector Initiatives Abra Lyons-Warren has been invited to join the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (CGLR)’s Learning Happens Everywhere initiative, an effort to encourage coalitions across the nation to position learning as a community-wide responsibility and to transform non-school places and spaces into learning-rich opportunities for children in economically challenged families.

MetroHealth’s proposed pilot project has been selected by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to participate in the FCC’s Connected Care Pilot Program. This pilot will support the System’s Digital Connectivity Initiative, which includes providing patients living in the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) housing with high-speed, low-cost internet access. The pilot proposes FCC funding of $901,000 over three years to subsidize internet connection for CMHA residents.

On a sunny Saturday morning, a dozen moms and dads sat around tables in a White Center elementary school library, looking at a PowerPoint slide of a little boy pouring syrup on his pancakes.

"What do you think would happen if I said nothing at all? How much would he put on there?" asked speaker Kellie Morrill, director of the Educare of Greater Seattle P-3 campus.

"Way too much," the parents replied.

The 44-unit apartment community is designed for project-based Section 8 vouchered single parents who are enrolled in college or a certification program in order to break the cycle of poverty.
