The Chicago Housing Authority and Operation Warm gave away more than 6,000 coats Saturday to people just before the city takes a turn toward winter weather.
"It just helps the community so much," said Angela Young, who received a coat at the drive.
That's the goal of Operation Warm, the non-profit that teamed up with CHA to support children and families in need before the cold sets in.
Residents and organizers celebrated the first anniversary of the Carol Stewart Village in Franklinton, a place designed to help at-risk youth find stable housing, healthcare, and prepare them for success.
“It kind of puts you on the right track once you have the stability of housing,” said Jay Kerr, a recently placed resident of the village.
Kerr says he was 19 when his foster parents kicked him out of the house.

The San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA) is taking unprecedented action to extend the eviction moratorium for more than 10,000 residents in its public or mixed-income housing communities through March 1, 2022.
$18 million is now going to address disparities for the underprivileged in Cleveland. It's called the "ACHIEVE GreatER" initiative, spearheaded by Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals.
The initiatve will help tackle complex issues that reside deeper than the surface of the skin. Medical issues that often get roadblocked by socio-economic challenges we face, especially for underdeveloped and struggling parts of Cleveland.

When the nonprofit Groundwork Hudson Valley honors Wilson Kimball at its “Here Comes the Sun” annual gala on Oct. 14, celebrating the proliferation of solar electricity projects in Yonkers, it will be shining a spotlight not only on her but also on the Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers (MHACY) for which she serves as president and CEO.
MHACY is the second-largest housing authority in New York state.

Miami-Dade County officials gathered Friday to hail their success in spending $60.8 million in federal emergency rental assistance, which they said has translated to helping more than 6,000 area families stay in their homes.
The assistance helped provide a bridge as uncertainty continued to reign about the threat of evictions.
A new photo exhibit was launched earlier this month of women making a difference in their NYCHA communities. It’s called “the Community Matriarchs of NYCHA.”
