Columbus MHA to receive $21 million in federal funds for emergency housing vouchers for homeless

The Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority will be using $21 million in new federal money to pay for emergency vouchers to house 298 homeless families.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the money as part of $5 billion being distributed nationwide for housing the homeless.

The Virgin Islands Department of Human Services has announced it has partnered with the Virgin Islands Housing Authority to implement the territory’s first housing assistance program for youth who have left (aged out of) the foster care system and are at risk of becoming homeless. The Chester Housing Authority is receiving about $3.5 million in federal funding to help dozens of families with young children move into neighborhoods with lower poverty rates and greater job and education opportunities.

It’s part of an effort by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to study whether changing childrens’ zip codes can improve their lives in the long term.

On Monday, May 17, HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge announced the allocation of $5 billion in American Rescue Plan funds for 70,000 emergency housing vouchers (EHVs) for individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.
