Those two words summarized the mission of a five-year plan to guide Connecticut’s schools. The State Board of Education drafted and began undertaking the plan five years ago.
Now the board is crafting a new five-year plan. It has a new chair to guide that process: New Haven’s Karen DuBois-Walton.
Grants boost two affordable housing projects in Vancouver (Vancouver Housing Authority)

Two affordable housing projects – one nearing completion and one in the planning stages –recently received grants from the Washington State Department of Commerce.
The city of Vancouver received $1,059,085 for Laurel Manor and $161,907 for The Meridian to cover sewer, water or stormwater improvements and/or waive system development charges.

A proposal to develop a city parking lot at 444 Bryant St. into affordable housing took a big step forward when the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors recently agreed to loan $9.75 million in county funds toward the project.
The Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the loan, funded through the county's Measure A Affordable Housing bond, on Feb. 8.

Denver has changed quite a bit over the past decade. The population is growing at record rates, while affordable housing initiatives on the state level have stayed on the back burner as developers have reeled in on a booming housing market.
“Last year the real estate market went up 20% in ownership units; this year it’s projected to go up another 20%,” said David Nisivoccia, executive director of Denver Housing Authority (DHA).

The Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh will apply for a $50 million grant for the Hill District in 2022, officials announced at a community meeting Tuesday night. The federal money, called a Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant, would be used to rebuild and expand the authority’s oldest housing development, Bedford Dwellings.

Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) CEO Jeffery K. Patterson was elected president of CLPHA’s board of directors at CLPHA’s December 2021 board meeting. He previously served as the board’s vice president.
