"For the first time in years, the Wilmington Housing Authority (WHA) is getting ready to build a new multi-family public housing development.

Plans for the first phase of the complex, Dawson Street Lofts, are moving through the city’s planning system. Located between Dawson Street, South 10th Street and Virgie Rhodes Lane, the building will hold 24 one- and two-bedroom units across three stories.

Some Seattleites who live in public housing will soon have access to free transit passes, a “life changer,” according to a representative for the city’s housing authority.

Mayor Jenny Durkan announced in February that her administration would offer about 1,500 Seattle Housing Authority (SHA) residents free unlimited ORCA passes. “Transit must be reliable and affordable because we need transit to meet our climate goals and because it makes people’s lives better,” the mayor said.

A facility to permanently house chronically homeless persons and provide a variety of services to help get them off the streets is set to be completed in late summer, county officials said.

The Queens Motel on Stoddard Wells Road, more than 50 years old, dilapidated, unused and within sight of passing motorists on nearby Interstate 15, will be renovated into Desert Haven Apartments.

Ask resident Carolyn Brown about her new apartment at Sandstone Quarry, and she can barely contain her excitement.

“I'm in heaven,” said Ms. Brown, 72, of her apartment at the newly opened mixed-income development in the Fineview neighborhood of Pittsburgh's North Side.

“It's a nice place down here,” said Ms. Brown, who said she appreciates the views of the city, as well as the safety of her one-bedroom apartment.

Seeking approvals for a 32-story tower offering apartments priced for low-income and luxury renters, a Milwaukee Housing Authority official said this may be the first mixed-income development of its kind for the community, but won’t be the last.

“When it works here, we can replicate it,” said Scott Simon, senior vice president of development for housing authority affiliate Travaux Inc.
