Bremerton eyes state program to help renters, owners (Bremerton Housing Authority)

Bremerton officials are looking to take advantage of a new state law that allows cities to levy a sales tax to fund affordable housing efforts.

The law, passed this year, allows cities and counties to implement a local sales tax to fund affordable housing projects. The local sales tax is credited against the state sales tax collected from that area – meaning residents won’t experience an increase in costs.

Gov. Mike Dunleavy has eliminated the state's senior benefits program, one of 182 line item budget vetoes he made to the state's operating budget last week. But organizations with federal funding, like the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, are still offering assistance for older Alaskans.

"When she was a little kid, Niesha Chism would sometimes pack a suitcase, heave it over the next-door neighbor’s fence and “run away” from home.

Some two decades later, Chism, now 33, sees her 2-year-old son head in the opposite direction — to the South Chicago home where she grew up.

That’s because Chism recently moved into the two-story brick Georgian right next door to the home where her parents still live.
