Tacoma Developments Receive LIHTC Financing (Tacoma Housing Authority)

The development of two affordable apartment communities in Tacoma, Wash., took a big step forward after securing critical financing.

Boston Capital announced it is investing $26.3 million in low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) equity in the construction of 1800 Hillside Terrace, recently renamed The Rise at 19th, a 64-unit development serving families experiencing homelessness, and Arlington Drive Youth Place, a 58-unit development for primarily homeless youth.

On Thursday, November 14, 2019 the Saint Paul Public Housing Agency (PHA) will mark the completion of a multi-million dollar upgrade of its Dunedin Terrace public housing development.  The 88 rental units in 22 four-plex townhomes were originally built for low income families in 1964, along with the adjacent Dunedin Hi-Rise for elderly residents.

The community came together to breathe new life into a mural at the entrance of the senior center at Astoria Houses in Queens. The mural, which was created in 1981, depicts Martin Luther King Jr. delivering his monumental “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Rosa Parks sitting peacefully but firmly at the front of a bus, Mahatma Gandhi meditating, marchers holding hands, as well as Reverend King lifting a young child while surrounded by his family.

Milwaukee’s Historic Soldiers Home to Get New Life (Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee)

Six buildings at the Milwaukee Soldiers Home, a national historic landmark district, are being rehabilitated into housing for veterans and their families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Located on the grounds of the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, the project is being led by The Alexander Co. and the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM).

Transition Brings New Havens Together (Elm City Communities)

Mayor-Elect Justin Elicker Friday tapped a diverse crew of grassroots activists — including a working families legislative leader, an immigrant rights champion, and a school parents organizer — to guide his transition and chart a policy course for the next two years.

Elicker introduced the co-chairs and two dozen other members of his newly formed transition team, at a press conference held at his campaign headquarters at 161 Whalley Ave.

Earning a college degree is often easier said than done, especially for working parents who are the first in their families to pursue higher education.

The college experience can be overwhelming. When new students first set foot on campus, they can get lost looking for a classroom or office. They may become exasperated trying to fill out financial aid forms. Students may feel like giving up.
