This Women’s History Month, CLPHA celebrates the women, from those in the highest halls of government to those who work daily in their local communities, who have helped provide and expand affordable housing opportunities and improve the life outcomes of low-income families.
While great strides have been made in the last few decades towards improving opportunities for women in society and the workplace, we are still a long way from achieving equity for women. In a world where systemic sexism widens disparities for women and creates glass ceilings in executive offices across career fields, we are proud of our robust representation of female PHA executives in our membership and on our board. Our organization, and our industry, is made sharper and more impactful thanks to the many women who have shaped the nation’s public and affordable housing landscape.
This representation in our industry matters because of who we serve: according to HUD, approximately 75% of households receiving housing assistance have a woman as their head of household. With so many women serving as the backbone of their subsidized households, CLPHA recognizes that providing stable, affordable housing opportunities is crucial to helping low-income women address the gender and racial disparities they face.
