Land purchase set to double Battle Ground’s affordable housing stock (Vancouver Housing Authority)

Vancouver Housing Authority is moving forward with plans that will nearly double the number of affordable housing units it has in Battle Ground.

The authority’s board of commissioners on Thursday approved purchasing 4.37 acres of land in Battle Ground for a future 80-unit development at 306 S.E. Clark Ave. in an older area of town, not far from downtown.

District of Columbia Housing Authority Executive Director Tyrone Garrett unveiled a working draft of phase one of the agency’s 20-year comprehensive plan to begin addressing tackle the up to $2.5 billion in deferred maintenance and capital improvements at more than 6,600 units in DCHA’s traditional public housing portfolio. The plan would preserve affordable existing stock and create new affordable housing.

One patient at Denver Health, the city’s largest safety net hospital, occupied a bed for more than four years — a hospital record of 1,558 days.

Another admitted for a hard-to-treat bacterial infection needed eight weeks of at-home IV antibiotics, but had no home.

A third, with dementia, came to the hospital after being released from the Denver County Jail. His family refused to take him back.

Starry, a Boston-based startup internet service provider, has partnered with Denver Housing Authority to offer broadband internet to affordable and public housing residents.

Denver is just the second city to get Starry’s low-cost internet, following a pilot program in Boston. The pilot program launched in 2016.

Housing authority seeks to transfer two complexes (Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority)

The Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority is negotiating with affordable housing developers and operators to acquire two complexes: Thornwood Commons, an 86-unit complex of townhouses and garden-style flats on the North Side near Interstate 71 and East 5th Avenue, and Kenmore Square, a 56-unit complex of town homes between Cleveland and Joyce avenues.
