Mayor announces free internet for 9,000 people in L.A. public housing (Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles)

Mayor Eric Garcetti announced a new initiative Friday designed to deliver six months of free internet access to residents in four public housing communities across Los Angeles, making low-cost, high-quality broadband options available to 9,000 people in nearly 3,600 housing units.

The initiative stems from a partnership between the Mayor’s Office of Budget and Innovation, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, Starry Internet and Microsoft Corp., a city statement reported.

Oftentimes San Diego’s homeless outreach efforts have been left to police officers, which can be dangerous for some unsheltered residents.

The Coordinated Street Outreach Program offers a different approach, using case managers to connect people with permanent housing and social services.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday the Fresno Housing Authority, in partnership with the city of Fresno, will receive nearly $16.5 million to purchase and rehabilitate three more motels to house people experiencing homelessness.

CCF to distribute $457K to Cambridge nonprofits (Cambridge Housing Authority)

The Cambridge Community Foundation is distributing almost a half million dollars in grants to nonprofits throughout Cambridge a month ahead of schedule as organizations deal with the increased need and financial impacts brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

CCF announced it is releasing the grants early -- including $367,000 to 59 organizations focused on hunger, homelessness and other housing challenges -- and is giving the organizations flexibility in how they spend the money.

About 7,500 children in Chicago public housing will be gifted a free winter coat this week at the Credit Union 1 Arena on the city’s Near West Side as part of the Chicago Housing Authority’s partnership with Operation Warm, a national non-profit that distributes new coats to children in need.
