Job Summary

Are you a dynamic and strategic communicator with a passion for creating content and visual storytelling? King County Housing Authority (KCHA) is seeking a Digital Communications Specialist to join our communication department and will be responsible for crafting compelling short-form content tailored for social media and modern digital media campaigns. 

A successful applicant will have the ability to plan, organize, and coordinate our digital and multi-media communications, creating content, preparing materials, and other related work as apparent or assigned. This position reports directly to the Senior Vice President of Communications and will be a hybrid role with occasional time spent at our Central Office in Tukwila, WA.

Essential Functions

The Digital Communications Specialist: 

Creates content and messaging; develops strategy, workflows, and policies for use of digital channels, including social media, newsletters, presentations, and website.

Oversees social media accounts, engagements, opportunities, and analyzes trends; tracks media coverage and collects news clips.

Plans, writes, edits, and proofreads materials and collateral; drafts, edits, and produces handouts, flyers, one-pagers, reports, graphics, videos, data visualization, internal and external newsletters, correspondence, presentations, and other products as needed.

Serves as liaison with communications contractors, including photography, video, graphic design, and website.

Provides support for ongoing marketing, media, and community relations activities; maintains and updates website as needed.

Assists with planning and executing logistics for special events.

Provides communications support to KCHA staff, including writing, editing, design, and distribution of information.

Provides training and oversight to selected staff as part of digital media and communications efforts.

Ensures a regular cadence of clear and consistent communications about KCHA’s programs and priorities for internal and external audiences.

 

Qualifications and Competencies

Experience & Education:   

Bachelor’s degree in communications, media, journalism, or a related field AND

Considerable experience creating content for social and digital media. Experience with graphic design, photography, and/or video is a plus OR

An equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:   

Excellent writing skills, attention to detail and judgment about use of organizational brand and voice with a strategic and creative mindset.

Knowledge of public relations, media relations, and Associated Press (AP) style.

Familiarity of social media algorithms and search engine optimization.

Principles of written and visual storytelling.

Equity and social justice concepts and language

Analyzes problems, identifies alternative solutions, and implements recommendations; demonstrates critical, creative, and reflective thinking. 

Demonstrated proficiency in cultivating an inclusive work environment that values and appreciates diversity, treats others with respect, and fosters cooperation.

Clearly and effectively communicates both verbally and in writing by actively listening and sharing relevant information.

Ability to work with staff, residents, and community partners to gather information, create content, and check facts.

Research and distill complex information into clear and concise messaging.

Works effectively and efficiently to provide quality service to satisfy service expectations while seeking for ways to improve service delivery.

Proficiency with MS Office programs and database software.

Special Requirements:

Consent to and pass a driver's and criminal records background check.

Must possess a valid driver's license and own or have access to a vehicle to regularly travel between work sites or have an alternative reliable mode of transportation.

Salary & Benefits:  

The starting salary range for this position is $77,936.77 - $95,472.12 annually, dependent on qualifications and professional experience. The complete salary range for this position is $77,936.77 - $113,007.48 annually. Performance-based merit increase opportunities and Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) are reviewed annually. A comprehensive health care benefits package for you and your dependents includes medical, dental and vision insurance, life and long-term disability insurance plans, vacation, sick and personal leave, tuition reimbursement, and retirement benefits are also available. Work Environment:  
After initial onboarding, this role will have the opportunity to work remotely in accordance with the KCHA's flexible work arrangements; however, remote work conditions will be reviewed on a regular basis based on business and program need. Employees must reside in Washington State and having the ability to report to the Central Office in Tukwila will be required. Some local travel may be required to support KCHA business needs.

Incumbent(s) must be able to meet the physical requirements of the classification and have mobility, balance, coordination, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the functions performed. This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires speaking or hearing and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
