ACL to Host Webinar on Partnerships with Independent Living and Assistive Technology Programs to Address Homelessness and Housing Stability

From the Administration for Community Living:

Based on point-in-time counts conducted in January 2017, it is estimated that nearly a quarter of individuals experiencing homelessness were people with disabilities. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) reports that over a million more households led by a person with a disability under age 62 are classified as having worst case housing needs — meaning they are either paying more than half of their income in rent, live in severely inadequate housing, or both — placing them at risk of homelessness. The number of Americans 65 and older experiencing homelessness is anticipated to grow from 40,000 today to 106,000 by 2030. Beyond securing housing that is affordable and adequate, many older adults and people with disabilities also need access to services and supports — including assistive technology (AT) — that meet their individual needs and preferences.

This webinar will highlight the benefits of partnerships between centers for independent living (CILs), statewide AT Act programs, and Continuum of Care (CoC) programs in the development and implementation of ongoing strategies to address homelessness. Designed and led by individuals with disabilities, the national network of CILs have the deep expertise and robust community networks to support and advance community living and independence for people with disabilities. State AT programs help people discover and use AT that helps them stay stably housed and engaged in the community.

Registrants will receive a confirmation email with information about joining the webinar. The webinar will include real-time captioning and ASL interpretation. Everyone who registers by 9:00 AM ET on June 29 will receive a Zoom reminder email that contains links to the slides, accessibility tips, and other handouts. If you need any additional accommodations, or if you have questions, please email HSRC@acl.hhs.gov.

This webinar is part of an HSRC series on partnerships between systems that can help older adults, people with disabilities, and people experiencing homelessness access all available resources and ultimately secure stable housing in the community.
