The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) today launched the Supportive Preservation Program (SPP), a new initiative aimed at stabilizing and preserving the City’s vital supportive housing stock. The program will establish a dedicated team to manage all supportive housing preservation projects with the goal of addressing the specific needs and policy issues faced by the supportive housing portfolio.

For years, residents of Yakima, Washington, drove by a former Marine Corps armory and understood its history from the two tanks parked in front. Lowel Krueger had an idea for the building’s new mission.  

“I thought, why wouldn’t we try to take something like that and turn it into housing for veterans who had been experiencing homelessness?” said Krueger, executive director of the Yakima Housing Authority.

Last month,  HACLA President & CEO Lourdes Castro Ramirez appeared on FOX 11's Good Day LA to discuss the House Our Vets Initiative, a collaboration with Mayor Karen Bass to get homeless veterans off the street and into stable housing. She speaks on the success of the initiative thus far, and answers questions, concerns and more.

From the Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino's newsletter:

Liberty Lane, a new affordable housing community in Redlands dedicated to serving veterans and individuals with special needs, began leasing to new residents in January. The development features 80 affordable apartment homes, including 62 permanent supportive housing units specifically reserved for homeless and at-risk veterans.

These homes will provide long-term stability combined with comprehensive supportive services designed to promote housing retention, wellness and self-sufficiency.

 The long-vacant former site of a City of San Diego public library will be transformed into nearly 60 affordable rental apartments for families through the development of Serra Mesa Apartments, which celebrated its groundbreaking today. Half of the apartments will be set aside for veterans experiencing homelessness.

Five years after reopening, the historic Old Main building on the Milwaukee VA campus continues to provide stable, permanent housing for Veterans who have experienced homelessness.

Originally constructed in 1867 as one of the nation’s first soldiers’ homes, the landmark building was vacant for decades before undergoing a major renovation. It reopened in March 2021 as part of the Milwaukee Soldiers Home campus, offering 101 housing units across six buildings.
