Fort Worth housing authority aims to build different approach to poverty

"After The Holston in the Alliance  corridor opened in June, Kendrick Ladd moved in with his clothes, a few personal items and his sister’s car. He is an Army veteran who was dealing with homelessness.

Today, Ladd, 32, is running a mobile mechanic business, Kendrick Ladd’s Auto Repair. He is working on getting the LLC paperwork complete.

 Public housing authorities know that providing stable housing is only the first step in helping families thrive. A comprehensive approach that combines health, education, and housing programs has shown to dramatically improve life outcomes for low-income families. Public housing authorities have been in the vanguard developing cross-sector initiatives for their residents, who represent extremely low-income and vulnerable populations.

Damien Wheeler spent first through 12th grade living with his mom, twin brother and sister in a sprawling neighborhood of subsidized duplexes and fourplexes in Vancouver, Wash. A rental voucher, SSI and other public supports kept the family afloat. 

“My mom, she did the best she could do and we all understood that,” Wheeler said. “She just told us to graduate and all of us did.”

On Veterans Day eve, dozens of formerly homeless vets in Prince George’s County have new homes.

They’ve qualified for vet-specific housing vouchers and have been paired with landlords and given keys during a special event in College Park.

Before-and-After Burns Apartments Modernization Photos, as Construction Continues (Cambridge Housing Authority)

As construction on the Cambridge Housing Authority 's Burns Apartments continues, CHA posted before-and-after photos of the community that highlight the significant progress the housing authority has made in revitalizing the property. Construction on the 198 units at Burns Apartments started in February 2020, and is scheduled to be completed in late 2022.

Silicon Valley Veteran Homelessness Reaches New Milestone (Santa Clara County Housing Authority)

Flags fly at half-mast each Nov. 11 to honor Veterans Day across the country. In Silicon Valley, fewer veterans will look at those flags while living on the streets.

All the Way Home, a campaign launched in 2015 to help end the homeless veterans crisis, has housed 2,201 veterans during the past seven years. The program is deemed a success in Santa Clara County, according to Destination: Home, a nonprofit that helps house the homeless.
