Helping children of incarcerated parents and children in foster care: A Princeton-Brookings Future of Children event with Harvard's Robert J. Sampson

Date & time:
Wednesday, May 9, 2018 - 4:00 am UTC
Though the United States is home to many vulnerable children and youth, two groups especially worthy of attention are those who have a parent incarcerated and those in the foster care system. Often minorities from disadvantaged backgrounds, these young people face serious handicaps that are likely to undermine their current wellbeing and, even more importantly, their development across the life course. On Wednesday, May 9, Princeton University and the Brookings Institution will release the latest issue of The Future of Children—a journal that promotes effective, evidence-based policies and programs for children, alongside a policy brief, “Helping children with parents in prison and children in foster care.” The current issue, titled “Reducing Justice System Inequality,” focuses on how the justice system exacerbates inequality for children and youth and proposes solutions to mitigate these effects. Following an overview of the latest journal volume and the accompanying policy brief, Harvard Professor Robert J. Sampson will give keynote remarks about the impacts of neighborhood inequality on children, especially those with incarcerated parents and those exposed to violence. The event will conclude with an expert panel discussion of ways to help the prospects of children with an incarcerated parent or who are or have been in foster care. All participants will take questions from the audience. You can watch a live webcast of the event by registering here: http://connect.brookings.edu/register-to-watch-helping-children?utm_camp...
