New JCHS Report Finds More Accessible Units Within Assisted Housing Stock

A recent report from the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies found that housing units receiving HUD subsidies were more accessible for older people and those with mobility difficulties compared to unsubsidized units occupied by low-income renters. A significant proportion of households served through HUD-assisted housing are older adults for whom accessibility is essential for successful independent living.

Youths aging out of foster care have a new place to live in Vancouver, Wash.

The recently completed Caples Terrace serves young adults 18 to 24 years who might not otherwise have a place to live. It’s the first project by the Vancouver Housing Authority (VHA) to target this unique population.

The Seattle Housing Authority and Kaiser Permanente have announced that Kaiser Permanente is purchasing 1.6 acres in the Yesler neighborhood. The property is located in the northwest area of Yesler and is bordered by Alder St. and 9th Avenue. Kaiser Permanente is planning a state-of-the-art specialty care facility on the site, a use that is closely in keeping with a community-led master plan for Yesler redevelopment.

The 2020 Seattle/King County Clinic will be opening its doors at Seattle Center, Feb. 13-16. The massive volunteer-driven clinic is usually held at KeyArena, but due to reconstruction, this year’s Clinic will be held in various buildings on the Seattle Center campus. Patients will check in and receive their tickets at Fisher Pavilion.

New York State’s first LGBT-friendly affordable elder housing featuring 145 units has opened in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Dubbed Stonewall House to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan that spurred the beginning of the national movement for LGBT rights, the community is the largest project of its kind in the U.S. and dates back to 2016 when planning began for the project then known as Ingersoll Senior Residences.
