A new research article published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine found that eviction causes not only financial shock, poor mental health, and displacement, but also impacts healthcare utilization and healthcare access. From a database of 20,810 reported residential evictions in New York City in 2017, researchers identified 6,922 NYC Medicaid patients that were classified as evicted. Over a six-month period, the study observed that these evicted patients made:
- 32% fewer prescription fills
- 40% fewer ambulatory care visits
- 22% more acute care visits
The study recommends that eviction prevention programs should ensure that Medicaid patients have appropriate access to care and help evicted patients maintain their Medicaid benefits.
