From the Chicago Housing Authority's press release:
The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) Board of Commissioners approved the financing Tuesday of Westhaven Park Phase 2D – the final rental phase of new housing planned for the former Henry Horner Homes public housing site. Construction is expected to begin this summer.
Located in the Near West Side neighborhood at 1953-59 West Lake Street, the development will offer 96 residential apartments, including 38 units for applicants from the CHA waitlist, 25 affordable and 33 market-rate units. The building will contain about 5,000 square feet of first-floor retail space, onsite resident parking, rooftop outdoor space, bike storage and a dog walk. Its location next to the new Lake and Damen Green Line CTA stop, makes this phase a transit-oriented development.
The original Henry Horner site contained 1,765 units located on approximately 26 acres of land. Since the demolition of those units, CHA has worked in collaboration with its developer-partner, Brinshore-Michaels, to create 643 mixed-income housing units in Westhaven Park.
CHA constructed another 461 housing units both onsite and in the surrounding neighborhood with various builders before 2000.
“The community has provided an important voice in the evolution of this development, and it is gratifying to see that participation come to fruition,” said CHA CEO Tracey Scott. “We remain committed to working closely with residents at Westhaven and throughout our portfolio to create greater housing opportunities all over Chicago.”
