Amount of Large Corporate Buyers of Rental Housing Spikes During Pandemic

The Housing Crisis Research Collaborative (HCRC) published a report analyzing the purchases of multifamily and single-family rentals in Atlanta, Miami, and Tampa the year before and after the emergence of the pandemic. HCRC found that the pandemic housing crisis has resulted in incremental growth in purchases by large corporate landlords and trading platforms, and by Q2 2021 this cohort doubled their quarterly single-family rental acquisition volumes of 2019. HCRC warns that “should their market share grow, and concerns continue with regard to eviction, maintenance, and rate hikes, finding ways to regulate these firms will remain an important policy concern.”
