Salvation Army Capts. Juan and Patricia Torres arrived in Ventura in July 2020, at the height of the pandemic. However, that did not slow them down.
They jumped quickly into serving the community by working to obtain more donations for the food pantry, which was providing groceries for roughly 500 families a week since the shutdowns started.
They also worked to create partnerships with local service groups and organizations to better serve Ventura. In the process, they noticed that the services they were providing were not reaching the city's west end.
Juan connected with the Housing Authority of the City of San Buenaventura. Within the first few meetings, the Salvation Army Ventura started a monthly food distribution at the apartments on the west side in August 2020.

"The Housing Authority of the City of San Buenaventura is so grateful to The Salvation Army Ventura Corps, their volunteers, as well as our resident volunteers, for serving our hard-working families," said Maria Martinez, housing authority resident services coordinator. "Resources are limited but with this collaboration we can do so much."
