"Here’s to the guys who didn’t forget where they came from, learned valuable lessons along the way and now help better the lives of others.

As a kid, Bill McGonagle grew up in the Mary Ellen McCormack development in South Boston. Some call public housing the housing of last resort, reserved for the poorest of the poor, and those without a voice.

By the time Bill McGonagle took the helm of the Boston Housing Authority, public housing was pretty much in a state of decline and disrepair. Hope VI funding aimed to revitalize the worst public housing projects in the country into mixed-income developments. McGonagle worked to rehabilitate hundreds of housing units.
