Full Job Description: 

The Tacoma Housing Authority (THA) is seeking a highly qualified candidate to become its next Executive Director. This position has full responsibility to lead and manage an innovative and effective public housing authority. THA has an operating budget of $75 million and a varied portfolio of 1,500 housing units and close to 5,000 vouchers. The agency is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners and staffed with 175 employees. THA is a recognized national leader in innovative ways to provide affordable housing, support services and social justice advocacy. Its activities and initiatives include ambitious real estate development, a management of a large and varied portfolio or properties, offering development services to nonprofits, provision of supportive services, building shared community prosperity, housing the homeless, and addressing gentrification. Designation as a Moving to Work agency in 2010 and designation by the Tacoma City Council as a public development authority have been key contributors to the agency’s high levels of success in innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurism.

Tacoma is a progressive community of 215,000 on the shore of Puget Sound in the State of  Washington. Its wide array of amenities include high-performing public schools, libraries, parks, museums, and colleges. Tacoma is near to some of the world’s most majestic natural features including the Cascade mountain range, Mt. Rainier National Park, the Olympic mountain range, Olympic National Park, and the beautiful Puget Sound.

The successful candidate must have completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree preferably in business administration, public administration, urban planning, law, or a closely related field.  Additionally, candidates must have a minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience with a public housing authority, a non-profit or for-profit affordable housing provider, or comparable management experience.  Candidates should also document that at least five (5) of those years were in progressively responsible leadership or management positions in housing organizations.  Alternately, candidates with exceptional academic or professional experience of other types may still be considered at the discretion of the THA Board of Commissioners.  Finalists will be required to provide academic, work history, and salary history verification.  The consultant will complete criminal and credit history background checks.
