Agency Attorney

The Attorney is responsible for advising the Executive Director, Department Directors and Board of Commissioners on legal matters, quality control, dispute resolution, insurance and risk management.  Assist in the negotiation, contracts and other in-house litigation matters, providing regular and routine guidance for the Housing Authority of Salt Lake City (HASLC) and its non-profit subsidiaries. 

Under direction, with wide latitude for independent judgment and unreviewed action and decision making, the attorney will perform sophisticated transactional legal work covering a broad array of subject matters, including, but not limited to, construction, finance and compliance related matters. The selected candidate will serve as a senior attorney and engage in difficult and complex transactional work handled by HASLC, having significant financial, procedural or policy consequences, including but not limited to drafting and negotiating significant/intricate contracts and handling prelitigation construction claims.

Attain deep industry knowledge and special business practices within enterprise to recommend senior business leaders.

Stay up-to-date with changes to legislation, particularly in relation to laws, rules and regulations that directly affect your business and specific industry.

Critical and strategic thinker with excellent negotiating and drafting skills.

Tact and good judgment in confidential situations and proven experience interacting with management and attorneys.

Ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships across the business.

Excellent writing, analytical, and research skills.

Ability to communicate complex legal issues and risks in terms that non-legal colleagues can understand.

Ability to work in a highly independent role and as a team player.

Education & Experience

Juris Doctorate degree in related field with license to practice law within the state of Utah is required.  Incumbents must remain Members of the Utah State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment. Minimum of five (5) years related experience in business law, government law or nonprofit organization administrations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
