HUD Secretary Details FY13 Budget Request to Senate Panel

HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan appeared before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies (THUD) on March 1, to explain the Administration’s FY13 budget request for HUD. Subcommittee Chairman Patty Murray (D-WA) opened the hearing by praising the encouraging signs that the economy is moving in the right direction, but indicated that we still face significant challenges.  Murray proceeded to enumerate some of those challenges, including the fact that for the first time, “FHA may require federal funding to cover its losses.” Read More >

House Panel Approves Views and Estimates on the FY13 HUD Budget

In keeping with the Rules of the House of Representatives, on March 6th the House Financial Services Committee marked up and approved—on a 26 to 19 vote—its views and estimates “on all matters within its jurisdiction” for the fiscal year 2013 budget resolution.  The Committee document also provides an estimate of the budgetary impact of all legislation which the Committee expects to consider during the coming session, as well as recommendations to improve governmental performance.  Included within the Committee’s views and estimates were recommendations for HUD programs.

New HUD Data Reveals Extent of Public Housing Underfunding

HUD’s office of Public and Indian Housing (PIH) recently released data requested by the industry groups on the FY13 Operating Fund eligibility.  This data has typically been included in the Department’s Congressional Justifications annually; however, this year, the detailed data was excluded from the FY13 Justifications.

HUD to Host CNI Planning Grants Conference Call

On February 29, HUD released a Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) announcing $5 million for the 2012 Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grant Competition.

The HUD Choice Neighborhoods Team is hosting a conference call on Thursday, March 15 at 12:30pm EST that will provide an overview of the Planning Grant Competition.

HUD Publishes Notice on Bedbug Control and Prevention in Public Housing

On February 28, HUD published PIH-2012-17, with related attachment, on guidelines on bedbug control and prevention in public housing.  In order to address the serious and growing problem of bedbug infestations, the Department published the Notice to provide “information and references to best practices regarding the prevention and control of bedbug infestations” as well as provide guidance “on the rights and responsibilities of HUD, Public Housing Agencies (PHAs), and tenants with regard to bedbug infestations.”
