On Wednesday, March 16th, CLPHA and HUD’s Office for Policy Development and Research (PD&R) cosponsored a symposium on research on HOPE VI redevelopment efforts. Participants were welcomed by Assistant Secretary for PD&R Raphael Bostic, who said his office was "thrilled" to be approached by CLPHA with the idea for the event. He said this type of event has been missing and is sorely needed, as people ask “where’s the data?”. Assistant Secretary for Public and Indian Housing Sandra Henriquez provided an overview of HUD’s vision for the Choice Neighborhoods program. She said it was based on lessons from HOPE VI, in particular how to integrate the multiple challenges of improving the lives of residents and creating neighborhood assets with positive impacts for neighborhoods.Read More >

During CLPHA’s Spring Meeting March 17th-18th, two bills of significant interest to CLPHA members were re-introduced in Congress. On the Senate side, Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Housing, Transportation and Community Development Subcommittee of the full Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, introduced S. 624, the “Choice Neighborhoods Initiative Act of 2011”. Senator Menendez last introduced this bill in December during the waning days of the last Congress.
On the House side, Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA), a senior member of the Insurance, Housing and Community Opportunity Subcommittee of the full Financial Services Committee, introduced H.R. 1209, the “Section 8 Voucher Reform Act of 2011”.Read More >
